DGFT Streamlines Halal Certification Process for Meat and Meat Products

The DGFT has issued a notification streamlining the Halal certification process for meat and meat products. Under the new policy, meat and meat products can only be exported as “Halal certified” if produced, processed, and/or packaged in a facility with a valid certification under the “India Conformity Assessment Scheme (i-CAS) Halal” of the Quality Council of India, issued by a certification body accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB). All existing Halal Certification Bodies have six months to seek accreditation from NABCB for i-CAS Halal. Additionally, existing export units have six months to register themselves at a dedicated and integrated online portal for meat exports developed by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority. The policy aims to improve the quality of Halal certification for meat and meat products exported from India.
