India Allows Export of Agri Residue Based Biomass and Briquettes/Pellets

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry in India has announced an amendment to the country’s export policy for biomass. In a notification issued on February 14, 2023, the government has allowed the export of agri residue-based biomass and briquettes/pellets under ITC-HS heading 1213, moving it from the restricted to the ‘Free’ category.

The decision is expected to boost the country’s biomass industry by opening up new markets for the export of agri residue-based biomass and briquettes/pellets. It will also benefit farmers, who can now earn additional income by selling their crop residue to biomass companies.

Previously, the export of fodder, including wheat and rice straw, was only allowed under restricted conditions. However, this new policy change now permits the export of agri residue-based biomass and briquettes/pellets without any such restrictions.

This move is expected to encourage the development of India’s biomass industry and contribute to the country’s transition towards more sustainable and renewable sources of energy.
